Dan Moir, a Calgary firefighter and parent, attended a hockey tournament in December 2024 where his son fell ill with a headache and nausea, along with several other players. Recognizing the symptoms, Moir suspected carbon monoxide poisoning, which was later confirmed. A total of 23 children and two adults, including Moir’s son, required treatment at Alberta Children’s Hospital due to exposure to carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide emitted by fuel-powered equipment in the ice arena.
The incident shed light on the lack of universal adherence to safety practices in ice arenas, despite federal recommendations. The absence of CO monitors on-site was alarming to parents, leading to calls for increased awareness and safety measures. The Village of Rockyford, near Edmonton, confirmed the incident on its Facebook page.
Elevated CO levels were detected by fire officials at the arena, prompting Health Canada’s recommendation to halt activities when levels exceed 25 parts per million. The lack of regulations regarding CO monitors in ice arenas was described as “mind-blowing” by affected parents. Carbon monoxide leaks have been a recurring issue in ice rinks across Canada, with incidents reported in various locations over the years.
Combustion-engine equipment in ice rinks can emit harmful pollutants like CO and NO2 when not properly maintained, posing health risks to occupants. Symptoms of CO exposure include dizziness, headaches, and nausea, with potential long-term effects on cognitive functions. Preventative measures, such as CO alarms and proper ventilation, are crucial to mitigating the risks associated with carbon monoxide poisoning in indoor ice facilities.
