British Government Condemns Anti-Immigrant Protests

The British government expressed strong disapproval of the aggressive and intimidating actions carried out by anti-immigrant demonstrators who gathered at a port in southern England where migrants had arrived after crossing the English Channel.

A large group of protesters, many of whom were clad in dark attire and masks, clashed with police in Portsmouth late Sunday in an effort to obstruct lifeboats from disembarking the migrants. They later attempted to impede buses transporting the newcomers to an asylum seeker processing facility.

In response to the events, the government issued a statement emphasizing the importance of peaceful protest within a democratic society, while cautioning against actions that incite disorder.

The demonstration in Portsmouth occurred following a similar incident the previous day, where masked anti-immigration protesters disrupted traffic and travelers at Dover, a key ferry port in Britain. Both protests seemed to be organized by Daniel Thomas, a close associate of veteran far-right activist Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, known as Tommy Robinson.

The issue of migrants crossing the English Channel has been a persistent challenge for successive U.K. governments, with over 40,000 individuals undertaking the perilous journey last year. Politicians like Nigel Farage from the Reform UK party have labeled the situation as a crisis, utilizing it as a focal point for anti-immigration advocacy.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s administration credited enhanced law enforcement collaboration between Britain and France for a significant decrease in crossing attempts this year compared to 2025. The boat carrying around 140 individuals to Portsmouth had departed from Normandy, a considerable distance west of the usual departure points near Calais, France, making the voyage longer and more hazardous.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency of Britain reported the involvement of lifeboats, a coast guard helicopter, and an aircraft in the operation to bring the migrants safely ashore.
