Toronto Blue Jays’ pitcher, Dylan Cease, who pursued theatre over art during high school, is now showcasing his artwork at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO). The AGO shop has unveiled a limited edition retail collection featuring Cease’s painting inspired by Toronto, displayed in Walker Court. The collection includes prints, postcards, T-shirts, sweatshirts, and totes, with proceeds supporting the AGO’s charitable initiatives.
Cease, reflecting on his artistic journey, admitted to not taking art classes in high school and expressed uncertainty about his teachers’ opinions on his work. As he engaged with kids from summer camps discussing art, a significant lineup of Blue Jays fans eagerly awaited to meet him at the AGO, a sight that left Cease humbled and surprised by the overwhelming response.
Having only started painting in 2022, Cease had previously created artwork for a charity supported by former San Diego teammate Michael King. His Toronto piece has also found a place in the office of Blue Jays manager John Schneider. Despite teammates suggesting he paint himself pitching, Cease humorously acknowledged his abstract style due to limited drawing abilities.
Motivated by the prospect of spending his 30s in Toronto, Cease, who recently signed a lucrative seven-year, $210-million US deal with the Blue Jays, found inspiration for his art. Delving into Canadian culture and history, Cease’s artistic pursuits provide him with a creative outlet distinct from the intensity of baseball, allowing him to find balance and joy in painting.
Looking ahead, Cease plans to explore oil painting next, emphasizing the joy and freedom painting brings to his life. Regardless of where his artwork ends up, he finds fulfillment in the process and the opportunity to express himself through art.
