Aunt saves niece battling cancer with selfless transplant

A devoted aunt traveled over 4,000 miles to help her niece, who was battling cancer and was denied a liver transplant by the NHS. Phoebe Clarke’s parents received the devastating news of her rare liver cancer diagnosis in February last year. The nine-year-old’s only hope for long-term survival was a complete liver replacement, which was initially refused by the NHS due to concerns about the likelihood of the cancer recurring.

However, a remarkable fundraising effort raised nearly £200,000, and Phoebe’s aunt, Sarah Billington, offered to be a donor. With the family’s determination, they journeyed to Saudi Arabia for the life-saving procedure. Phoebe’s parents, Matt Clarke and Lindsey Billington, were adamant that their daughter deserved a fighting chance, despite the challenging odds posed by hepatic angiosarcoma, a highly invasive and grim prognosis cancer.

Following a successful liver transplant at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Riyadh, Phoebe’s recovery progress was positive, albeit with some expected discomfort. Her aunt, Sarah, who donated a portion of her liver, was praised by Lindsey for her selfless act. Messages of support poured in from Manchester City footballer Erling Haaland and former boxing champion Frank Bruno, boosting Phoebe’s spirits during her recovery.

Despite initial setbacks with the NHS declining to perform the transplant, the family expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support that enabled them to seek treatment abroad. Dr. Magnus Harrison of Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust expressed regret over the difficult decision but stood by the consensus that a liver transplant was not the best course of action for Phoebe, as supported by NHS Blood and Transplant.

The family’s journey to secure the life-saving transplant showcased the power of community and resilience, underscoring the importance of support in times of adversity.
