An animal trainer in Orange County, California, named Kwong ‘Tony’ Chun Sit, was found guilty of causing the death of 11 dogs by leaving them unattended in a hot van for hours and then attempting to cover up the incident by burning their bodies. Sit, who ran the Happy K9 Academy, faced charges of animal cruelty, destroying evidence, and obstructing the investigation.
His girlfriend, Tingfeng Liu, was also convicted of being an accessory to the crime, destroying evidence, and attempting to destroy evidence. The dogs were kept in small crates in the van, where they succumbed to heat stroke, with one of them, Rosie, suffering blunt force trauma. Sit posed as the dogs’ owners to have them cremated.
District Attorney Todd Spitzer condemned the heinous act, stating that the dogs’ worst fear of abandonment became a tragic reality due to Sit and Liu’s cruel actions. He emphasized the severe consequences awaiting those who abuse animals, especially someone who could harm a defenseless puppy.
The Irvine Police Department initiated an investigation after dog owners received suspicious messages about their pets’ deaths and cremation. Sit sent a message to one owner, falsely claiming that the dog had passed away peacefully, offering condolences and refunding the training fee.
Sit and Liu attempted to cover their tracks by delivering the dogs’ bodies to different crematoriums in the area. The police were alerted when the owners shared the text messages they had received. The couple’s deceitful actions were uncovered, leading to their convictions for their cruel treatment of the innocent animals.
