Stanley Cup Winner Lyle Odelein Dies at 58

Montreal Canadiens defenseman Lyle Odelein, a Stanley Cup winner with the team in 1993, has passed away at 58 years old. The Canadiens officially announced Odelein’s death in a statement over the weekend. Reports from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette indicated that Odelein suffered a fatal heart attack. He concluded his 16-season NHL career with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2005-06 and resided in the region.

Originally from Quill Lake, Saskatchewan, Odelein tallied 20 goals and 75 assists in 420 matches for Montreal from 1990 to 1996. Known for his physical play, he ranked second in the team’s history with 1,357 penalty minutes, leading the team in this aspect during his six-year tenure. Drafted by the Canadiens in the seventh round in 1986, he played a total of 1,056 NHL games with Montreal, New Jersey, Phoenix, Columbus, Chicago, Dallas, and Pittsburgh.

Expressing their condolences, the Canadiens stated, “The entire Canadiens organization mourns the loss of Lyle Odelein, who passed away at 58 on Friday.” They extended their sympathies to Odelein’s family, friends, and loved ones. Odelein notably served as the first captain of the Columbus Blue Jackets when the franchise entered the NHL in 2000.

The Blue Jackets acknowledged Odelein’s contributions in a social media tribute, highlighting his role as the team’s inaugural captain and his impact on the organization and community. Additionally, the Pittsburgh Penguins honored Odelein’s memory, remembering his tough on-ice persona alongside his generous spirit and infectious laughter.
