Jacob Shaffelburg’s impressive performance led the Canadian men’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Peru in a friendly match during the international break. Shaffelburg scored both goals in the first half, opening the scoring in the 19th minute and doubling the lead in the 35th minute. The match, played at Montreal’s Stade Saputo in front of a sellout crowd of 19,619, saw Canada dominate the game.
Daniel Jebbison contributed an assist as Canada, ranked 30th globally, continued their successful start to the new World Cup cycle. The Canadian team controlled the game with 61% possession and outshot Peru 17-4, with a 3-0 advantage in shots on target. This victory improved Canada’s record to 3-1-0 against Peru, having previously defeated them 1-0 at the 2024 Copa América.
Despite an unusual rendition of O Canada at the beginning of the match, the Canadian team quickly gained momentum. Notable chances included midfielder Nathan Saliba’s pass to winger Liam Millar and a missed opportunity by star striker Jonathan David. Shaffelburg capitalized on his chances, scoring two goals to secure the win for Canada.
In response to injuries and other absences, Canada’s coach, Jesse Marsch, made significant substitutions during the match. The team’s young goalkeeper, Owen Goodman, made his debut, while several key players were sidelined due to injuries, including Alphonso Davies, who was away on his honeymoon.
Before the match, Samuel Piette, a central midfielder and CF Montréal captain, was honored by Canada Soccer in front of his hometown crowd. Piette made his 70th appearance for the national team during the match and expressed his desire to continue playing for the team.
The Canadian men’s team will face the United States in their next match in St. Paul, Minnesota, as they look forward to the upcoming Nations League quarterfinals in November.
