A judicial hearing in Saskatoon is scheduled for Monday afternoon to address the city’s potential clearance of a section of a homeless encampment in the west end. This legal battle mirrors similar disputes seen in various Canadian cities from Victoria to Kitchener, Ontario.
Crystal Fafard has filed an injunction to halt the removal of tents from a parking lot located at 301 Avenue K South in Saskatoon. The injunction hearing is set for 2 p.m. CST. The parking lot is part of a larger encampment near 20th Street West and Avenue K South. Advocates argue that displacing individuals without providing adequate housing and support is unjust.
City officials in Saskatoon have cited safety concerns at the site. Deputy fire chief Yvonne Raymer highlighted issues such as fencing erected by St. Mary’s School to separate the encampment from students, as well as complaints received by the fire department regarding needles, drug use, and overdoses.
Tensions escalated at the site last week when fire officials and police attempted to clean up and secure the area with fencing. However, protesters intervened, leading the city to halt the operations pending the court proceedings.
Melissa Zimmer, the founder of Bridge City Warmth, an organization that assists individuals living on the streets, expressed concerns about the uncertainty faced by those at the encampment. Zimmer mentioned that the residents are anxious about their future and are eagerly awaiting clarity on their next steps, whether it involves setting up a new encampment or seeking alternative housing solutions.
