At least 62 individuals have lost their lives due to heavy rainfall and flooding in Uttar Pradesh, a state in northern India, according to officials on Monday. The state government reported 46 people sustaining injuries and over 1,000 houses being damaged following three days of intense rainfall that led to flooding in multiple districts.
In response to the situation, schools were shut in various parts of the state, including Lucknow, the capital. Rescue teams were actively relocating residents from flooded areas to safer places. People were cautioned against unnecessary travel in waterlogged areas and advised to steer clear of swift-flowing rivers, streams, and drains.
The precipitation was anticipated to diminish starting Monday as a weather system above the Bay of Bengal weakened, as stated by Atul Kumar Singh, a senior scientist at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Lucknow. Singh mentioned the likelihood of sporadic light rain persisting in the eastern and western regions of the state until Tuesday.
Moreover, flooding impacted Odisha, an eastern Indian state, prompting the evacuation of over 75,000 individuals to secure locations, according to officials.
In Nepal, which shares a border with India, 21 casualties were recorded due to weather-related incidents from Thursday to Sunday, as stated by the country’s disaster management agency. Additionally, five individuals were still missing, five others sustained injuries, and 194 houses were damaged by floods and landslides.
Nepal is currently in the process of recovery from severe floods in August that resulted in the loss of over 1,400 lives and left nearly 6,000 individuals unaccounted for.
