Canada’s Denis Shapovalov was defeated by Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz in the semifinals of the Chengdu Open in China. Shapovalov, the seventh seed in the ATP 250 tournament, lost to Hurkacz in a close match that lasted over two hours. Despite Shapovalov’s 14 aces and four double faults, Hurkacz managed to save all three break points he faced, serving eight aces and winning 85% of his first-serve points.
This victory improved Hurkacz’s record against Shapovalov to 6-1. Shapovalov, who was aiming to secure his second ATP Tour final appearance of the season following his win at the Los Cabos Open in July, fell short. Hurkacz will now face Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the second seed, in the upcoming final match on Tuesday.
