Rescue teams were in search of twelve individuals who were carried away by an avalanche that resulted in the deaths of at least two people on a Nepalese mountain amidst harsh weather conditions. Ten individuals were successfully rescued from Mount Himlung, a 7,126-meter peak situated in north-central Nepal, following the avalanche occurrence on Sunday. All the victims, either deceased or missing, were citizens of Nepal. The avalanche struck while they were at a base camp preparing for the arrival of foreign climbers for the autumn climbing season that began this month.
Helicopters were utilized to transport the ten rescued individuals, while the bodies of the two deceased were airlifted to Kathmandu airport on Monday and then transferred to the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital. Relatives and acquaintances were present at the hospital morgue but declined to provide comments.
Reports of flooding and landslides emerged in the Manang district, the mountain’s location, over the weekend due to heavy rainfall, as confirmed by the district administration office. The recent avalanche incident coincided with the government’s warnings of severe weather conditions throughout the entire Himalayan nation.
According to Nepal’s disaster management agency, 21 individuals lost their lives and five others are currently missing in various regions of the country from Thursday to Sunday. Nepal continues to recover from the catastrophic flooding in August, which ravaged numerous villages, resulting in over 1,400 fatalities and nearly 6,000 individuals unaccounted for.
