Jérémie Bonneau, the lead author from Laval University, expressed sadness over the loss of the Milne Fiord epishelf lake on Ellesmere Island in Nunavut, emphasizing its singular status in Canada.
The vanishing of this once-common natural phenomenon highlights the impact of a warming climate on the Arctic region. The new study, published in Scientific Reports, outlines the process leading to the irreversible loss of the lake, marking the end of a 4000-year era.
Epishelf lakes like the one in Milne Fiord form due to natural barriers, such as ice shelves, preventing freshwater from mingling with the surrounding seawater. This unique setup creates distinct ecosystems within the same water column, fostering diverse communities of bacteria, viruses, and phytoplankton.
The researchers discovered minimal overlap between the freshwater and saltwater communities in the lake, showcasing the separate ecosystems thriving just centimeters apart. The lake’s intricate biodiversity included previously unreported microbial species, some of which resided in sediments and had never been observed in the Arctic before.
Tragically, the collapse of the Milne Ice Shelf in 2020 led to the abrupt draining of the epishelf lake, causing the immediate demise of its inhabitants as freshwater mixed with seawater. The loss of this rare ecosystem underscores the ongoing transformations in the Arctic due to climate change.
While epishelf lakes have disappeared from Canada, a few still exist in Greenland and Antarctica. However, experts warn that these unique ecosystems are at risk, emphasizing the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect the planet’s natural beauty.
