Four years after the tragic death of a young woman whose name became synonymous with the fight for women’s rights and freedom in Iran, Amnesty International has revealed that the subsequent government crackdown was a systematic campaign with the perpetrators still at large.
Mahsa Amini, aged 22, passed away on September 16, 2022, following her arrest by Iran’s morality police for wearing “unsuitable attire.”
In a detailed report released on Wednesday, Amnesty International highlighted that the same officials implicated in Amini’s case are currently leading violent crackdowns. The report identifies numerous officials allegedly involved in what is described as crimes against humanity.
The authors of the report are calling for international intervention to prevent the continuation of deadly crackdowns that have persisted for years.
Raha Bahreini, Iran researcher at Amnesty International in London, emphasized, “The lack of global action on international justice is sending a dangerous signal to Iranian authorities that they can commit crimes with impunity.”
The report by the U.K.-based NGO outlines evidence of crimes against humanity, such as murder, torture, enforced disappearances, and persecution based on political, gender, ethnic, and religious grounds to suppress dissent.
While the protests earlier this year were initially sparked by economic grievances, they evolved into broader demands for political change, met with brutal repression by the security forces.
Amnesty International reported that a significant number of deaths occurred during the protests, with Kurdish and Baluchi communities disproportionately targeted. These communities, predominantly Sunni in a Shia-majority nation, suffered a disproportionately high number of casualties.
The findings come in the midst of ongoing armed conflicts in the region, with talks to end the regional conflicts facing obstacles.
Amnesty International cautioned against using human rights abuses as a justification for unlawful military actions by the U.S. and Israel against Iran. The organization condemned all violations of international law by any party.
The report called for criminal investigations into 87 officials involved in the crackdown, including high-ranking individuals in Iran’s security apparatus. The report uncovered a chain of command behind the alleged crimes against humanity.
Despite the challenges faced since Amini’s death, civil disobedience and resistance have continued, leading to changes in societal attitudes towards discriminatory laws in Iran. The spirit of resistance remains strong, despite attempts to suppress dissent.
The ongoing push for justice and accountability underscores the importance of addressing human rights violations in Iran and preventing further atrocities.
