The Montreal Canadiens have officially extended the contract of head coach Martin St. Louis for multiple years, the team announced on Monday. St. Louis has successfully led the Canadiens to consecutive playoff appearances, including reaching the Eastern Conference final last season, amidst a rebuilding phase.
Initially brought on as an interim coach in February 2022 following Dominique Ducharme’s departure, St. Louis transitioned into his first NHL coaching role after previously coaching youth hockey. The 51-year-old Hall of Fame player from Laval, Quebec, had the interim tag removed at the conclusion of the season, signifying his permanent position.
Exact details of the new contract were not disclosed. St. Louis boasts a coaching record of 163-155-47 as he enters his sixth season with the Canadiens. His efforts were recognized in 2025 when he was a finalist for the Jack Adams Award, acknowledging the NHL coach of the year, after guiding the Canadiens back to the playoffs for the first time since the 2020-21 season.
Despite being the youngest team in the league at the time, Montreal was eliminated in the first round by the Washington Capitals. Canadiens’ general manager Kent Hughes commended St. Louis, stating, “Marty has done a terrific job leading our young team. He is a great communicator and teacher. We look forward to his continued efforts to mold this group into a championship-caliber team.”
Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2018, St. Louis amassed 1,033 points in his illustrious career before retiring in 2015. His most notable season was in 2003-04 when he clinched the Hart Trophy as league MVP, the Art Ross trophy for leading scorer with 94 points, and contributed to the Tampa Bay Lightning’s Stanley Cup victory.
