Arinn Young showcased an outstanding performance, contributing 23 points, six rebounds, and nine assists to help Canada secure an 80-37 victory over Brazil in Group A competition at the wheelchair basketball world championships held at TD Place on Sunday.
In addition to Young’s stellar performance, Cindy Ouellet and Elise Froese made significant contributions with 15 points each coming off the bench, propelling Canada to a 4-0 record in the tournament.
Reflecting on the team’s success, Canadian veteran Élodie Tessier emphasized the collective effort, stating, “It was really a team win. Coming off such an emotional game against China can sometimes alleviate the pressure for the next one.”
Brazil’s Geisa Vieira led her team with eight points, but the Canadians dominated the game from the start, establishing a commanding 19-4 lead after the first quarter and maintaining their advantage throughout.
Despite being outrebounded 33-31, Canada’s efficient shooting at 56% from the field, coupled with a 26-14 edge in assists and forcing Brazil into 28 turnovers compared to their own nine, sealed the victory.
Next, Canada will face Great Britain in their final group stage match at Carleton University on Tuesday.
