Parts of British Columbia are experiencing severe drought conditions this summer, leading to water restrictions in Bessette Creek to protect salmon populations from low flows. Temporary protection orders for the Salmon River watershed were issued due to increased wildfire risk and then reinstated later. Bob Crandall, treasurer of the Cowichan Lake Salmonid Enhancement Society, highlighted the drying streams and the society’s efforts in fry salvage to rescue fish and move them to other waterways. While the intervention is crucial, scientists caution that it may not be a sustainable long-term solution.
Collaborating with the Ts’uubaa-asatx Nation and volunteers, Crandall and his team relocate fish like salmon, trout, and char to areas with more water. The changing climate has made the work more challenging, with streams drying up farther upstream than before, requiring increased effort in fish relocation. The process involves using aerators and bubblers to ensure fish survival during transport, a task made difficult by hot weather conditions.

In France, Jean-Pierre Faure from the Fédération de Pêche du Rhône noted the severe impact of this year’s drought on fish populations, highlighting the inadequacy of current management programs in coping with changing conditions. Fish in low-flow rivers experienced heightened competition for resources due to reduced water volumes, leading to increased mortality rates. Faure stressed the need for ecosystem restoration and water-use management over short-term interventions like fish relocation, citing the high costs and limited effectiveness of large-scale rescue efforts in severely impacted watersheds.
