In the recent provincial byelections held on Thursday, Ontario’s Progressive Conservatives maintained their stronghold in the ridings of York-Simcoe and Hamilton East-Stoney Creek, while the NDP secured Scarborough Southwest.
NDP’s Fatima Shaban emerged victorious in Scarborough Southwest with a comfortable lead of 2,240 votes, capturing 40.47% of the total votes with all 57 polls reporting and a voter turnout of 26.5%.
In York-Simcoe, PC candidate Susan Lahey secured a win with a 2,549-vote margin, garnering 49.81% of the votes and a voter turnout of 21%.
Meanwhile, PC’s Jeff Beattie clinched the victory in Hamilton East-Stoney Creek with a 1,614-vote lead, securing 38.87% of the votes with all 44 polls reporting and a voter turnout of 29.25%.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford celebrated the victories with Beattie at Clifford Brewing Company in Hamilton, emphasizing the election of strong local representatives committed to advancing the province’s interests.
The Ontario NDP praised Shaban’s win in Scarborough Southwest on a social media platform, highlighting her dedication to the community and the party’s goals of affordability and equitable resource distribution.
The byelections were triggered by the resignation of three MPPs in early August, leading to competitive races in Scarborough Southwest, York-Simcoe, and Hamilton East-Stoney Creek.
Scarborough Southwest saw a vacancy after Doly Begum resigned to pursue a federal position, with Shaban ultimately triumphing over Liberal candidate Ahsanul Hafiz and PC candidate Noor Tarun.
In York-Simcoe, the departure of Caroline Mulroney prompted a contest between Lahey, Liberal Naomi Davison, and NDP’s Bobby Nikmard.
Hamilton East-Stoney Creek became available following Neil Lumsden’s retirement, with Beattie emerging victorious over the NDP’s Monique Taylor and Liberal Heino Doessing in a closely fought election.
