Tributes are being paid to a mother of two who tragically lost her life in a plane collision on a road in Prince George recently. The victim, identified as Alex Garneau, was struck by a Beech King Air 200 aircraft while driving along Foothills Boulevard. The plane landed on the road, crossed three lanes, and hit four vehicles.
Garneau was actively involved in the community, especially in sports, where she participated as an athlete, coach, and volunteer for her children’s teams. Described as a dedicated wife, daughter, sister, friend, and hockey mom, she was known for her inclusive nature.
Many social media posts from organizations she was associated with echoed the sentiments of her positive impact. The Cariboo Cougars minor hockey club and the Prince George Youth Volleyball Club honored Garneau for her contributions to sports in the region.
An online fundraiser was set up to assist Garneau’s family, raising over $100,000 in just two days. The funds will directly support her loved ones during this difficult time.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with the Transportation Safety Board (TSB) taking charge. The TSB revealed that the aircraft lost power in one engine, leading to the emergency landing. The plane has been moved to a nearby gravel pit for further examination.
The Beech King Air 200 was en route to Prince George Airport from Sturdee Airstrip with eight individuals on board, including resource workers. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the occupants. The aircraft was registered to Sekani Air Ltd., a local charter flight company.
Former TSB investigator Bill Yearwood raised questions regarding the cause of the crash, highlighting the pilots’ quick decision-making in emergency situations. Investigations are ongoing to determine the factors that led to the tragic event.
