Brooke Henderson Thrives Under Spotlight at CPKC Women’s Open

Brooke Henderson embraces the pressure of being in the spotlight during Canada’s LPGA tournament. Having claimed victory twice at the CPKC Women’s Open in recent years, Henderson has shown that the added attention in her home-country event is not a burden.

“This week is quite demanding and holds special significance for me,” Henderson expressed. “I have been able to draw energy and positivity from the fans who come out to support me. The love and positive vibes fuel me, and I have been able to turn that into an advantage over the years, which is truly thrilling.”

The 28-year-old golfer from Smiths Falls, Ont., is aiming for a third triumph at her home tournament, commencing on Thursday at the Royal Mayfair Club in Edmonton. Reflecting on her past victories in 2018 and last year, Henderson described them as career highlights and deeply meaningful moments, especially with her sister by her side during the last win.

The CPKC Women’s Open boasts a star-studded lineup, with six of the world’s top 10 golfers participating, including the current top-ranked player, Nelly Korda of the United States. Henderson ranks 11th among the top 25 players present at the tournament.

Having secured impressive finishes at the Women’s PGA Championship and the Evian Championship this year, Henderson feels confident about her game. Following a tie for 29th at the AIG Women’s Open in Britain, she is motivated to continue her strong performance.

Apart from her success on the course, Henderson has experienced personal milestones, becoming an aunt and getting engaged to Ricky Castro, a pitching prospect for the Minnesota Twins. She believes that these positive developments off the course have contributed to her relaxed mindset and enhanced performance on the greens.

Henderson leads a group of 15 Canadians out of the 156 professionals and amateurs competing at the Royal Mayfair Club in Edmonton. Among the contenders is 17-year-old Anna Huang from Vancouver, who recently clinched her fourth Ladies European Tour victory in London.

This year’s CPKC Women’s Open marks the 52nd edition of the tournament in Canada since its inception in 1973. The event returns to Edmonton for the fourth time, with the Royal Mayfair Club hosting it for the third time.

Lydia Ko, a three-time winner of the tournament, returns to vie for a historic fourth victory. Ko credits the CPKC Women’s Open for playing a crucial role in preparing her for her Olympic gold medal win in Paris.

Despite wet conditions due to heavy rainfall in Edmonton, the tournament is expected to feature a mix of sun and clouds, with potential showers forecast for Saturday night. Players are bracing themselves for mosquito infestations, with Henderson noting the bug situation but feeling relatively unaffected compared to others.

The tournament attendance record of 73,000 was set in 2024 at the Earl Grey Golf Club in Calgary, indicating the growing popularity of women’s golf in Canada.
