“Crown Challenges Mistrial Decision in Stronach Case”

The Crown is challenging a rare decision for a mistrial that was made after the verdict in Frank Stronach’s sexual assault case last month. The billionaire entrepreneur was convicted of sexual assault and indecent assault in June, based on allegations from two women during his trial in Toronto. However, a mistrial was declared on the sexual assault charge by Superior Court Justice Anne Molloy following the presentation of emails from one of the women’s lawyers in a separate civil case. Stronach’s lawyer, Leora Shemesh, argued that these emails contradicted the woman’s testimony in the criminal trial. Shemesh mentioned that the woman did not testify before the mistrial was announced.

Initially facing twelve charges related to incidents from the late 1970s to 1990s involving seven accusers, Stronach had one charge withdrawn by prosecutors while being deemed not guilty on four others by the end of the trial in April. The judge dismissed two additional charges due to unreliable evidence from one accuser, leaving Stronach with five charges from three accusers, resulting in his conviction on two counts. He is scheduled to be sentenced in September for the indecent assault conviction.

Aurora, Ontario, has decided to remove Frank Stronach’s name from a recreation complex after his sexual assault conviction. The businessman’s guilt in sexual assault and indecent assault charges has been confirmed.
