Canada’s senior women’s national basketball team secured a victorious start at the FIBA Olympic pre-qualifying tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico, defeating Senegal 72-57. Kayla Alexander led the team with 16 points and seven rebounds, supported by Syla Swords and Delaney Gibb contributing 13 points each.
Head coach Nell Fortner expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, emphasizing the importance of beginning the tournament with a win. Canada demonstrated tenacity on the boards, particularly excelling in offensive rebounds with a 15-8 edge. Tara Wallack’s four offensive rebounds also played a vital role in creating additional scoring opportunities.
Swords made an early impact by sinking three three-pointers in the first quarter, aiding Canada in establishing a significant lead. Despite Senegal’s resurgence in the third quarter, Canada maintained control throughout the game. Noteworthy statistics included a 26-14 advantage in points in the paint, shooting an impressive 52.5% from that zone. Both teams scored 11 points off turnovers, while Senegal narrowly outscored Canada’s bench 31-29.
Canada will enjoy a day off before their next matchup against the Philippines on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
