Maher, who served as the play-by-play commentator for the Flames for 33 consecutive seasons starting in 1980, was known for his iconic catchphrases such as “Yeah, baby!” and “You can put it in the win column!” His broadcasting career included memorable moments like the Flames’ Stanley Cup victory in 1989 and their 2004 finals appearance before retiring after the 2013-14 NHL season.
The Calgary Flames expressed their condolences to Maher’s loved ones and fans, acknowledging his significant impact on the Flames community. Maher was not only a beloved voice for the team but also a dedicated ambassador and community member. Born in Campbellton, N.B., Maher initially called Toronto Maple Leafs games before relocating to Calgary when the Flames moved from Atlanta in 1980.
