“Kitchen Storage Wars: Survey Finds Fridge vs. Pantry Disputes”

Many households face disagreements over where to store common kitchen items like eggs, ketchup, and bread. A recent survey revealed that two-thirds of people have argued with family members over whether certain foods belong in the fridge or pantry, with such disputes occurring around twice a month over the past year.

The uncertainty surrounding food storage is widespread, as more than three-quarters of respondents admit to being unsure about the ideal storage location for various items. While some rely on traditional practices passed down from parents, a growing number, around 40%, now seek guidance online on this matter.

According to a study conducted by biscuit brand Bahlsen, Brits are often puzzled about where to store bananas, potatoes, avocados, bread, jam, and honey, with percentages ranging from 12% to 21%. Food waste expert Kate Hall emphasizes the importance of proper food storage, especially in hot weather conditions, noting that factors like temperature, humidity, and light exposure can significantly impact food quality.

Hall suggests refrigerating certain items like apples to prolong freshness and crispness, while keeping potatoes in the fridge can extend their shelf life. Opened jams and marmalade should also be stored in the fridge to prevent mold growth. Additionally, refrigerating sauces and condiments can help preserve their flavor and quality over time.

Regarding eggs, Hall advises that in the UK, they can be stored at room temperature for optimal freshness. However, if the temperature exceeds 20°C, refrigeration is recommended. It is also advised to keep eggs in their original packaging to prevent absorption of odors from other foods. Fresh herbs, berries, and cucumbers are among the foods that benefit from refrigeration.

On the other hand, tomatoes should not be refrigerated as it can alter their taste and texture. Chocolate biscuits may be chilled, but storing chocolate bars in the fridge can cause a white film to develop on the surface. Olive oil should be kept in a cool, dark cupboard away from heat, and refrigerating honey can accelerate crystallization.

Lastly, bananas are best left at room temperature to ripen naturally. Hall also cautions against storing coffee, onions, garlic, and avocados in the fridge until the latter is ripe to avoid premature spoilage.
