Russia launched a targeted aerial bombing on Ukraine, resulting in the deaths of three civilians, including two young girls aged five and ten. The attack occurred in Sumy, located in northeastern Ukraine, while Kyiv deployed additional drone strikes deep inside Russia, specifically targeting the Wildberries e-commerce platform.
A total of eight guided aerial bombs were deployed by Russia in Sumy, a region that has faced repeated attacks in recent times as Ukraine struggles to defend against air assaults.
In the Sumy region of northern Ukraine, six Russian glide bombs caused the deaths of three individuals, including the two young girls and an elderly woman, as reported by Oleh Hryhorov, the head of the Sumy regional military administration. Additionally, Russian forces targeted Kharkiv along with 18 other towns and villages in the northern region over the preceding 24 hours, resulting in one fatality and seven injuries, including an eight-year-old child.
Responding to the attacks, Ukraine retaliated by launching 300 drones to strike cities and industrial facilities across Russia. Among the targets were two significant Wildberries logistics hubs near Moscow and St. Petersburg, both hit in the recent wave of Ukrainian drone assaults.
The latest series of attacks have brought the total number of strikes on the online retailer Wildberries to 20, as Kyiv intensifies its focus on disrupting Russia’s supply chain. Local governor Andrei Vorobyov confirmed that a warehouse in an industrial area in Chekhov, Moscow region, was set ablaze during the strike, resulting in five fatalities and six injuries. Ukraine alleges that the facility was contributing to Russia’s military efforts. In response to the ongoing threat, Wildberries is reportedly considering relocating its operations to Kazakhstan to evade future drone attacks.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently expressed concerns over the overwhelming pressure on Ukraine’s air defenses just as his forces were gaining momentum against the Kremlin. Zelensky emphasized the urgent need for anti-ballistic missile systems to protect civilian lives, stressing the importance of immediate action rather than hypothetical scenarios.
Ukraine has made repeated appeals to the US for additional Patriot missiles to intercept ballistic threats. While there is a possibility that the US may grant Ukraine a license to manufacture its own Patriot missiles, each costing £3 million, US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker clarified that a final agreement is not expected before winter. Whitaker highlighted the potential for collaboration with Ukrainian and European partners to enhance defense capabilities for Ukraine and Europe.
