A woman who was controlling and envious subjected her partner to mental and physical abuse, which tragically led to the partner taking her own life shortly after reaching out to the authorities.
Kathryn White and Claire Alex connected via the dating app Tinder in August 2021. However, their relationship turned tumultuous by July 2022, culminating in a violent incident where White assaulted Alex and prevented her from seeking help by taking away her phone.
Following months of torment, Claire eventually confided in the police, expressing that she felt shattered and lost due to White’s oppressive behavior. Tragically, just four days later, Claire took her own life.
White, residing in Mayfield Mews, Crewe, denied the allegations of controlling conduct but was found guilty after a trial. The court heard accounts of White’s persistent emotional and physical abuse, including threatening to harm Alex and assaulting her in public.
During the sentencing, the judge remarked that White’s actions constituted a prolonged pattern of abuse. White, a former army officer, was noted to have mental health challenges and a history of trauma, as mentioned by her defense lawyer.
The prosecutor highlighted how White isolated Alex from friends and family, displaying a high level of control over her daily life. The judge, in delivering the sentence, criticized White for her lack of remorse and empathy throughout the trial, sentencing her to three years and six months in prison.
