A heart-wrenching case resulted in a life sentence for a cruel couple who passed blame back and forth following the sexual abuse and tragic death of a two-year-old girl in their care. Alexandra Walker, the girl’s mother, aged 26, and her boyfriend, Harrison Simpson, aged 22, received guilty verdicts after denying the horrendous abuse of Isabelle Welsh.
Isabelle suffered a fatal head injury and passed away in hospital the day after collapsing at her residence in Thornaby, Teesside. The child sustained 21 broken bones leading up to her tragic demise. Today at Teesside Crown Court, Walker and Simpson were handed life sentences with minimum terms of 22 and 28 years, respectively.
During the toddler’s critical moments at home, Walker delayed seeking help, choosing to smoke a cigarette and search online instead of immediately calling emergency services. Medical responders discovered extensive bruising across Isabelle’s body, along with other alarming signs, upon their arrival.
Forensic evidence indicated severe physical trauma inflicted on Isabelle, including a fractured skull and signs of sexual assault. Experts testified that the toddler had been violently shaken and likely had her head forcefully struck against a surface.
Despite Walker expressing suspicions about Simpson’s behavior, including concerns about potential pedophilic tendencies, she failed to take decisive action to protect her daughter. Isabelle had previously been taken to medical facilities for a broken leg, but Walker’s explanations were met with skepticism by healthcare providers.
The jury unanimously found Simpson and Walker guilty of murder and child cruelty after hours of deliberation. Prosecutor Richard Wright KC described the child’s death as the culmination of a prolonged period of violent abuse. Tragic videos from before Simpson’s involvement in Isabelle’s life depicted a happy child at play.
The court learned of Walker’s past experiences with domestic abuse and her use of surveillance cameras at home. The couple’s lifestyle, marked by heavy drinking, cannabis use, and involvement in drug dealing, was revealed through CCTV footage. Walker’s mother expressed concerns about Isabelle’s well-being during visits, highlighting signs of abuse.
Upon arrest, Simpson remained silent while Walker initially provided conflicting accounts of the events leading to Isabelle’s death before eventually admitting her suspicions about Simpson’s actions. The judge condemned both defendants for their heinous actions and attempts to conceal the abuse.
