Three migrants lost their lives while attempting to reach the UK during a particularly active day for Channel crossings this year. The tragic incident occurred when a group of individuals was discovered deceased on a boat off the coast of Dunkirk, as reported by the French coastguard. Prime Minister Andy Burnham acknowledged that the Government’s efforts to reduce Channel crossings were showing progress but emphasized the need for further action.
The boat was sighted around 6 a.m., and the three individuals onboard were found unresponsive. Despite rescue attempts, they were pronounced dead upon reaching shore. Wednesday witnessed a surge in crossing attempts, attributed to favorable weather conditions and calm seas.
In a separate event, a small boat overturned off Hardelot on the northwest coast of France late Wednesday, resulting in one fatality, a man estimated to be between 30 and 40 years old, and six individuals sustaining minor injuries, including a one-year-old child. A judicial inquiry has been initiated to determine the cause of the accident.
Approximately 700 migrants are believed to have crossed the Channel on Wednesday, with French authorities observing numerous individuals boarding dinghies bound for the UK from Hardelot beach. Smugglers have adjusted their tactics, using larger rubber dinghies that operate as “taxi” boats along the French coast, thereby evading increased police presence on beaches. Notably, a record 128 migrants arrived on a single dinghy this month, surpassing the previous record set in September last year.
In April, the UK agreed to a £662 million deal with France to enhance coastal policing, with a significant portion allocated to combatting taxi boats. However, the release of £160 million is contingent on the effectiveness of French operations. Despite previous funding injections failing to stem Channel crossings, the UK plans to allocate additional funds for more officers and surveillance technology in northern France. Nevertheless, concerns have been raised by charities, fearing that heightened enforcement could drive more individuals to attempt perilous journeys, potentially resulting in more fatalities.
A government spokesperson expressed deep sadness over the recent deaths, emphasizing the tragic nature of each loss in the Channel and condemning criminal organizations exploiting vulnerable individuals for profit. Collaborative efforts with the French authorities and international partners are ongoing to prevent such hazardous journeys, with the French leading the response and investigation into the recent incidents.
