Robert Bush, a disgraced funeral director, faces sentencing for a string of crimes spanning 12 years, during which he spent over £42,000 on vacations while deceiving grieving families. Bush, who has pleaded guilty to 67 offenses including preventing lawful burials, fraud, fraudulent trading, and theft, is set to undergo a five-day sentencing hearing where more than 100 victim impact statements will be presented.
One victim, Jasmine Beverley, shared her heartbreaking testimony about the discovery of her son’s remains at Legacy Independent Funeral Directors, managed by Bush. Baby Sunny’s body was found almost two years after his family believed they had received his ashes and held a funeral. The shocking revelation came to light when the police were alerted to the site by employees from another funeral home who were asked by Bush to assist in body retrieval while he was away on vacation.
During the investigation, officers uncovered a chilling sight of bodies stored in a cold storage area, many in various stages of decomposition. Financial records revealed Bush’s lavish spending habits, including substantial amounts on holidays, motorcycle racing, and home improvements, coinciding with his fraudulent activities.
Prosecutors disclosed Bush’s extravagant expenditures over a seven-year period, which included multiple trips to popular destinations, jewelry purchases, expensive meals, and theater outings. Despite significant sums being deposited into his accounts, discrepancies in reported turnover raised suspicions of financial mismanagement and self-serving priorities.
Furthermore, a search of Legacy Funeral Directors uncovered disturbing finds, such as a small item initially mistaken for a baby bird, later identified with hospital wristbands belonging to a baby, affirming the tragic mishandling of remains under Bush’s care. Victim testimonies, including Jasmine Beverley’s emotional address to Bush during sentencing, emphasized the profound impact of his callous actions on grieving families.
As the sentencing proceedings continue, Bush, formerly of Kirk Ella, East Yorkshire, now residing in Otley, West Yorkshire, remains in custody pending the conclusion of his legal fate.
