Estimations suggest that the by-election will amount to £250,000 to £300,000, a sum that the Liberal Democrats argue could have been used to provide dental check-ups for numerous children in need. Helen Maguire, the party’s spokesperson for primary care, expressed dismay over the misallocation of taxpayer funds, emphasizing the deteriorating state of local healthcare services and the lack of dental care for Clacton residents.
Recent NHS dental data highlights that only 53.6% of children in the Tendring Council area, encompassing Clacton, had visited an NHS dentist in the preceding 12 months. This statistic translates to 7,852 children in Clacton missing essential annual check-ups. The Liberal Democrats calculated that ensuring these children receive check-ups would cost £263,749 based on the local appointment fee of £33.59, criticizing Farage for neglecting dental issues during his tenure as an MP.
Farage’s decision to trigger the by-election amid a parliamentary investigation into a substantial financial “gift” he received prior to becoming an MP has drawn further scrutiny. The possibility of a suspension looms if he is found to have violated regulations, potentially leading to another election. Despite the absence of major party candidates, a plethora of parody and independent contenders, including Count Binface, are challenging Farage in the race.
Reform UK offered to cover the election expenses, but electoral rules prohibit candidates or parties from funding such events. A spokesperson for Reform UK criticized Labour for rejecting their offer and urged the Liberal Democrats to exhibit genuine concern for Clacton by actively participating in the election rather than criticizing from the sidelines.
