A man recounted a frightening experience when he was forcefully propelled into his doorway following a massive explosion that ripped through the rural area of Essex. Police announced a critical situation as a significant amount of fertilizer detonated, leading to evacuations of residents while firefighters battled a fire in the vicinity of East Hanningfield and Rettendon.
The inferno, which consumed industrial structures and a field, generated a massive fireball and a shockwave felt up to 15 miles away. Firefighters continued to address the aftermath of the flames the next morning after an overnight firefighting effort.
Scott Johnson, a 46-year-old wedding photographer from Chelmsford, Galleywood, observed the explosion and described the impact as so intense that it thrust him against the door of his studio. Recalling the moment, Scott expressed astonishment, stating, “I’ve never witnessed or heard anything like it before. I could feel it. I was near the door, and the force pushed me into the studio door just as I closed it. Had the door been open, I would have been propelled into the studio.”
He added, “I gazed upwards, and there was debris engulfing me, ablaze, with fragments of metal, wood, and various materials descending. Despite having a ringing in my ear, I emerged unharmed.”
Scott managed to salvage most of the valuable equipment from his studio at the industrial estate where it is situated. The Essex County Fire and Rescue Service deployed a team of 100 firefighters at the peak of the emergency response as evacuations were conducted in the immediate vicinity.
Residents were advised to seal their doors and windows as a precaution due to the substantial smoke plumes. Approximately 50 firefighters remained at the scene the following morning to extinguish the remaining remnants of the fire.
Group Manager Dave Walpole mentioned, “We anticipate being present throughout the day, with some smoke still emanating from the site, so please maintain closed windows and doors.”
Area Manager Dave Bond stated, “We project an extended presence here, likely through the night and into the next day. Although visible smoke may persist overnight, the prevailing wind direction favors dispersion away from residences. In case of doubt or if you detect the odor, it is advisable to keep doors and windows shut as a preventive measure. A thorough inquiry will be conducted to determine the fire’s cause.”
Moreover, Area Manager Dave Bond reassured, “While this is a substantial fire, it is under control, posing no broader risk to the public. Several industrial units and a field have been ablaze, and crews are diligently working to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby homes.”
He emphasized, “An explosion occurred within one of the units due to fertilizer, causing residents across the county to hear and feel its impact. Consequently, a major incident was declared, ensuring the public’s safety. All individuals at the scene are secure, nearby residents have been evacuated for precautionary measures during the firefighting operation, and Southend Road is closed for safety and operational purposes.”
“We anticipate a prolonged presence at the location. As it continues to emit substantial smoke, we advise nearby residents to keep their doors and windows shut. Road closures will persist, and the area should be avoided.”
