FIFA is projected to earn approximately £3.8 billion ($5.2 billion) from the World Cup, as per recent research findings. Brand Finance, a leading brand valuation consultancy, analyzed the tournament’s impact and determined that it generated £45 billion in enterprise value, with £2 billion coming from sponsorships, resulting in a substantial return on investment.
During the extended World Cup held in the US, Mexico, and Canada, sponsors saw an estimated increase of £5.3 billion in their combined brand value. The study, which integrated Brand Finance’s valuation model with sponsorship analysis of 21 official partners, highlighted FIFA’s significant financial gains expected during the 2023-2026 commercial cycle.
The brand value of the “FIFA World Cup 2026” was assessed at £3.8 billion, with £1.4 billion attributed to sponsorship revenue, marking the primary contributor to this valuation. FIFA’s success in the commercial realm has been reinforced by its expansion efforts.
The 2026 tournament featured 48 teams playing 104 matches across 16 host cities, yet the demand from sponsors surpassed the available opportunities. Richard Haigh, the Global Managing Director at Brand Finance, commended FIFA for its robust commercial strategy, emphasizing its ability to secure sponsorship revenue upfront irrespective of individual sponsors’ campaign outcomes.
Looking ahead, FIFA plans to further expand the World Cup and its sponsorship program, with talks of a potential 64-team tournament on the horizon. Despite concerns about diluting sponsor value with larger events, FIFA has managed to strengthen its commercial appeal with each expansion.
While sponsors may eventually question the limits of growth, current data suggests that FIFA remains exceptionally adept at capitalizing on the world’s most valuable sporting platform. Meanwhile, England concluded their World Cup journey impressively, defeating France 6-4 in a thrilling match and displaying sportsmanship in victory, led by Captain Harry Kane and the team’s dignified demeanor.
