Three teenagers have been sentenced to detention after a tragic incident where a 16-year-old boy was fatally stabbed on a beach in North Ayreshire.
Jay Stewart, aged 19, Cole Turley, aged 18, and an unnamed 15-year-old, took the life of Kayden Moy, 16, following a confrontation on Irvine beach on May 17, 2025. They have been given minimum detention sentences of 16, 16, and 14 years, respectively.
Turley confessed to the crime, while Stewart and the 15-year-old were convicted of murder after a trial at the High Court in Glasgow last month.
The perpetrators and the victim belonged to rival gangs, ‘Murray Boys’ and ‘Himshie group,’ in East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire.
During the trial, it was revealed that just before the attack, Turley, Stewart, and the 15-year-old were throwing rocks from the top of a sand dune at people on the beach.
Kayden’s girlfriend, Keryn Knox, who was present at the scene, recounted that as they were preparing to leave around 6 pm, Kayden confronted the teenagers after the rocks were thrown, leading to the tragic altercation.
Witnesses described how Turley brandished a knife and Stewart wielded an extendable baton when confronted by Kayden and another individual at the top of the dune.
The attack left the 16-year-old severely wounded, resulting in his untimely death.
During sentencing, the judge highlighted that the trio had planned the assault that day and showed no regard for Kayden’s life, with two of them carrying weapons, including the knife used in the fatal stabbing.
The judge handed Stewart and Turley minimum detention terms of 16 years each, and the 15-year-old a minimum of 14 years.
Kayden’s family expressed their profound grief in a victim impact statement, stating their irreplaceable loss and eternal love for him.
Before the sentencing, Kayden’s father, Paul Moy, shared a heartfelt message on social media, emphasizing the lasting impact of their son’s absence and the pursuit of justice and remembrance for his life.
