“Beware: Parasite-Linked Illness Spreading in Tourist Hotspots”

British travelers are being cautioned about a food-related issue following an increase in cases of a parasite-induced infection known as cyclosporiasis in popular holiday destinations like Mexico and the US. Cyclosporiasis is caused by a parasite called Cyclospora, which is usually transmitted through the consumption of contaminated food or water containing the parasite from human feces.

Symptoms of cyclosporiasis include watery diarrhea and severe bowel movements that can persist for weeks. Travel Health Pro highlighted that a majority of cases in the UK have been traced back to visits to Mexico, emphasizing that the parasite is commonly found in tropical and subtropical regions, with summer travel abroad being a common risk factor.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 843 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis in the US between May 1 and July 9 this year, with no fatalities but 86 hospitalizations. To reduce the risk of infection, Travel Health Pro recommended practicing good food and water hygiene, especially when consuming fresh produce like soft fruits, lettuce, salads, and herbs while abroad.

Additionally, it was advised that individuals who develop symptoms of cyclosporiasis, which may occur about a week after consuming contaminated food or drinks, seek medical attention promptly. While the infection typically resolves on its own, individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV, may experience more severe illness. If symptoms persist or reoccur, medical advice should be sought immediately, either abroad or upon returning to the UK.
