A British pensioner known for playing bowls and suspected of being involved in drug smuggling has shared his harrowing experience of being ensnared in a £7.85 million inheritance scam that led to his arrest in Chile. William “Billy Boy” Eastment, 80, recounted his ordeal, revealing how criminals manipulated him into carrying over 5kg of methamphetamine in his luggage, resulting in his detention in a Chilean prison.
Initially, Chilean authorities suspected Eastment of drug trafficking upon his arrival from Cancun, Mexico, where he was found with Class A drugs valued at around £200,000. Despite facing the grim prospect of a lengthy prison sentence, a thorough examination of his electronic devices corroborated his innocence, prompting prosecutors to drop the charges and allow him to return to the UK.
Having spent nearly a year in Chile, Eastment is eager to return to his modest bungalow in Somerset, longing for a simple cup of tea with milk and a home-cooked roast chicken dinner. However, his return journey poses challenges as he has lost essential items like his wallet and bus pass, making it uncertain how he will navigate the final leg of his trip back home.
Eastment’s ordeal began with an email promising him a substantial inheritance, leading him on a whirlwind global journey orchestrated by scammers who exploited his trust. Despite his efforts to verify the legitimacy of the scheme, he unwittingly became a pawn in an elaborate drug smuggling operation, culminating in his arrest in Chile.
After enduring months of uncertainty and fear in prison, Eastment’s innocence was eventually recognized following a thorough police investigation, which revealed the extent of the fraud he had fallen victim to. The relief of being cleared of charges and granted an emergency passport to return to the UK marked the end of his traumatic ordeal.
Now, as he prepares to reunite with his loved ones and savor the taste of freedom, Eastment looks forward to resuming a quiet life in his bungalow, far removed from the dangers and deceptions that once threatened to consume him.
