WhatsApp is on the verge of addressing a major concern by introducing a new feature that encourages users to take prompt action to stay current. Traditionally, users have been required to share phone numbers to engage in chats on the platform, which is not always ideal. However, after a prolonged wait, the Meta-owned app is rolling out a solution by introducing unique usernames. This change will allow users to share their usernames instead of their phone numbers.
According to WhatsApp, the act of sharing a phone number can be a significant step, especially when connecting with new acquaintances like classmates, neighbors, event attendees, or participants in group chats. The new feature of unique usernames aims to provide an alternative for users who prefer not to disclose their phone numbers when initiating conversations.
Moreover, the update will enhance the privacy of group conversations. For instance, individuals joining community or social group chats will now have the option to participate without immediately revealing their phone numbers to unfamiliar contacts. WhatsApp has confirmed that users can secure their preferred usernames in advance of the full launch. Due to the extensive user base of the platform, popular usernames may be claimed rapidly, underscoring the importance of early reservations to secure desired usernames.
To reserve a username, users must update WhatsApp to the latest version and navigate to Settings > Account > Username. The rollout of this feature will occur gradually over the next few months, with WhatsApp notifying users when usernames become accessible in their respective regions.
