A tragic incident unfolded at an American music festival when a newborn baby was discovered dead inside a portaloo, leading authorities to classify it as a homicide. The infant, found by the cleaning crew at Electric Forest in Michigan during routine maintenance, was believed to have been born in the festival’s camping area based on the presence of the placenta and umbilical cord inside the portaloo. Reports indicated that the baby was born alive, with fluid in its lungs and stomach.
Michigan State Police confirmed that the death of the newborn has been labeled a homicide following an autopsy that took place on Wednesday, with an official report pending. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have yet to disclose any information regarding individuals connected to the child.
During the festival near Lake Michigan, thousands of attendees camped on the grounds from Thursday onwards. Police have urged anyone with relevant information or who witnessed anything unusual in the area to come forward and assist in the investigation.
Despite the somber news, Electric Forest expressed its sorrow over the incident and reiterated the ongoing investigation by Michigan State Police. However, criticism arose over the festival’s celebratory post at the event’s conclusion, with users calling the organizers ‘tone deaf’ given the tragic circumstances.
In addition to the baby’s death, the festival also faced other distressing incidents, including a car crash and a suicide. A missing person, Jerard ‘Jay’ Jackson, was reported leaving the festival and was later found to have taken his own life. Michigan Police linked a car crash to the event, with another individual still missing.
