In the early hours of Thursday morning, Kyiv was shaken by multiple powerful explosions that set off fires across the Ukrainian capital. Russia initiated a destructive attack on the city using ballistic missiles and drones.
As air-raid sirens blared throughout Kyiv, residents hurried to underground stations with their sleeping bags and pets, seeking safety from the intense blasts. Prior warnings had indicated an impending large-scale offensive.
President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine advised the populace to take the air-raid alerts seriously and exercise caution following reports of an anticipated significant strike by Russia. The city had already been on alert for hours as the residents prepared for a harrowing night.
The assault began with attack drones, with the sound of air defenses engaging them soon followed by a massive explosion around 11 pm. Subsequent explosions quickly ensued, with a notable fire observed in the city center shortly after, along with a smaller blaze nearby.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to remain in shelters as the night progressed, noting the entry of ballistic missiles into Ukrainian airspace following the drone attacks. More powerful explosions rocked Kyiv just before 2 a.m. on Thursday, causing car alarms to sound citywide.
Emergency services rushed to respond to the collapse of a nine-story apartment building, where trapped individuals awaited rescue. Firefighters also battled blazes at multiple locations, including a hotel rooftop and a residential property, as the chaos unfolded.
Although the exact number of casualties remains uncertain, Klitschko confirmed that five medical personnel sustained injuries. Many residents had anticipated a major attack akin to the previous night’s assault.
Ukraine has been applying pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin through strategic actions, including long-range drone strikes on Moscow, disrupting Russian fuel supplies, and launching significant offensives against Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014.
With the goal of bringing the conflict to Russia and compelling Putin to end the war, Ukraine remains resolute. Despite the deteriorating situation for Russian society due to the ongoing full-scale war since February 2022, Putin has displayed defiance and continued the conflict.
Zelensky, while in Ireland, emphasized Ukraine’s aspiration to join the European Union, seeking to move closer to EU membership during Ireland’s presidency. Ukraine has become a sought-after supplier of military technology globally, particularly in the drone sector, positioning itself as a key player in European security.
Leaders from various European nations view Ukraine as a vital barrier against potential Russian expansion, praising its role in enhancing regional security. As a result, Ukraine has strengthened its ties within the European defense community, including NATO, albeit through a gradual process.
