Firefighters are currently battling a large wildfire in the Peak District amidst a sweltering June heatwave across the UK. The fire originated at Tintwistle Moor near Glossop and Tameside, devastating wooded and grassy areas. Crews from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service fought the blaze continuously, with six fire crews, a water carrier, and a welfare unit on-site.
Dramatic footage released by the Derby Mountain Rescue Team revealed the extensive impact of the fire, affecting approximately 400 square meters of moorland and woodland. Concurrently, the Met Office recorded record-breaking temperatures, with Merryfield, Somerset, reaching 36.7C, marking the hottest June day in the UK so far.
High Peak MP, Jon Pearce, expressed concern over the wildfire’s impact, emphasizing the vulnerability of the region to such incidents. He urged the public to be cautious during hot, dry weather, emphasizing responsible behavior to protect the moorlands and communities. The A628 Woodhead Pass remains closed due to the fire, with authorities advising people to avoid the area and keep windows and doors closed if smoke is visible or smellable.
National Highways confirmed the closure of the A628 Woodhead Pass in both directions and recommended the use of the M62 as an alternative route.
