“King Snubs Buckingham Palace as Official Residence”

The King has decided not to make Buckingham Palace his official residence despite a £369 million renovation funded by taxpayers. Following the completion of the decade-long renovation project next year, Buckingham Palace will continue to serve as the operational center of the monarchy, while the King and Queen will reside at Clarence House in London. The decision breaks a tradition dating back to Queen Victoria in 1837 when the monarch was based at Buckingham Palace.

Royal aides emphasized that Buckingham Palace will still host numerous guests annually, including world leaders on State Visits and community heroes attending various events. The palace remains a significant symbol in royal and public life, according to a palace spokesperson.

In the latest annual report on royal finances, it was revealed that the King will receive a substantial pay increase, with core funding for the monarchy rising to £100 million per year, nearly doubling over three years. The Sovereign Grant, which supports official royal duties and palace maintenance, will see a significant boost to £99.9 million in 2027-28.

The decision to increase funding was made by Royal Trustees, including outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Chancellor Rachel Reeves, along with the King’s Keeper of the Privy Purse and Treasurer James Chalmers. The additional funding will address maintenance backlogs at royal palaces, enhance cybersecurity, and implement energy-efficient systems.

Despite the financial adjustments, concerns have been raised about the overall cost of the monarchy. Prince William’s inheritance has surpassed the King’s personal fortune, highlighting the financial dynamics within the royal family. Moreover, there is a call for greater transparency regarding royal finances and tax payments.

The Sovereign Grant report also outlined plans for future funding and the impact of changing economic conditions on royal finances. The royal household’s commitment to gender equality and closing the pay gap was highlighted, with Buckingham Palace leading efforts to promote diversity in the workforce.

As the monarchy adapts to changing times, the financial landscape and public scrutiny continue to shape the operations of the royal family. The upcoming years will likely see further discussions on funding, transparency, and the role of the monarchy in modern society.
