Parents and grandparents are being advised to stay extra cautious following the tragic incident where two children, aged two and four, were discovered lifeless inside a vehicle during intense heat in Carpentras, France. The distressing event unfolded amidst scorching temperatures that have swept across Europe, with some areas experiencing over 40C and multiple health advisories in effect.
The young boys were found unconscious in the family car, parked under direct sunlight in their residence’s driveway in the Bois de l’Ubac neighborhood. Despite immediate intervention by the mother and emergency responders, the children could not be revived and were declared deceased at the scene.
A probe for manslaughter is currently in progress, with a post-mortem examination revealing that the children succumbed to dehydration. Public prosecutor Hélène Mourges disclosed that the initial investigation suggests the kids might have entered the car without their mother’s awareness and got trapped inside.
According to reports, the mother allegedly informed the authorities that she had unintentionally left her children in the car while shopping, providing conflicting accounts of the incident. A neighbor expressed shock upon learning about the tragedy, emphasizing the children’s vibrant spirits.
In response to the heartbreaking event, Mayor Hervé de Lépinau of Carpentras has urged parents to exercise increased vigilance in caring for their children during the ongoing heatwave, expressing deep sorrow over the incident. He emphasized the critical need for heightened supervision in circumstances like extreme heat, highlighting the grave risks posed by unattended children in vehicles, swimming pools, and sun-exposed outdoor areas.
France has witnessed a record-breaking heatwave, with 72 out of 101 departments placed under a red heat alert as the nation recorded its highest-ever temperature on Tuesday, reaching 44.3C in Pissos, Landes, located in the country’s southwest.
