Andy Burnham may encounter obstacles in his bid to become the UK Prime Minister as Labour Members of Parliament deliberate on supporting potential competitors.
There have been suggestions for Darren Jones, the Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister, to enter the leadership race to challenge Mr. Burnham, amid concerns about his potential ascension without a contest. However, the likelihood of this happening seemed to diminish as a source close to Mr. Jones downplayed the idea of his candidacy.
Former defense minister Al Carns also hinted at considering a run for the top position. When asked about his potential leadership bid, he remarked that decisions are influenced by various factors and that he needed to align with a particular vision and policy before proceeding.
Doubts persist regarding the ability of either individual to garner the necessary support of 81 MPs to participate in the leadership contest. Mr. Burnham is reportedly backed by the majority of Labour MPs and would emerge as the frontrunner if a contest were triggered.
In the absence of challengers, Mr. Burnham could assume office as Prime Minister within a short timeframe. The window for nominations to replace Keir Starmer opens on July 9 and closes on July 16, indicating that Mr. Burnham could take on the role the following day if no competitor emerges.
Several Cabinet Ministers have voiced opposition to a strenuous leadership battle. Nick Thomas-Symonds, a loyalist to Starmer, expressed support for Mr. Burnham and advocated for a swift transfer of power.
On the contrary, backbencher Nadia Whittome emphasized the need to scrutinize Mr. Burnham’s ideas, highlighting various pressing issues facing the country that need to be addressed.
Labour MP John Slinger insisted on the necessity of a full leadership competition, asserting that subjecting aspirants to rigorous scrutiny was essential in the public’s eyes.
A Member of Parliament representing a Red Wall constituency expressed skepticism about Darren Jones’ prospects and emphasized the importance of Andy Burnham maintaining his position. The MP hinted at the possibility of a challenge from a Starmerite candidate if circumstances change in the future.
