A mother and her new partner face allegations of homicide and sexual assault involving a young child who sustained 21 fractures before passing away, according to court proceedings. The toddler, Isabelle Welsh, aged two, collapsed at her residence in Hartington Close, Thornaby, Teesside, after sustaining a severe head injury and could not be revived, as stated by jurors.
Alexandra Walker, 25, and Harrison Simpson, 22, are standing trial at Teesside Crown Court, denying charges of murder, child death facilitation, sexual assault, and child abuse. The couple, who initiated their relationship recently, had Simpson frequently visiting Walker’s residence, where he spent considerable time with the child.
Following a 999 emergency call made by Walker on September 13 reporting her daughter’s collapse, paramedics discovered Isabelle at the base of the stairs unresponsive and critically ill. Medical examination revealed extensive bruising on various body parts, blood in her diaper, and vomit on her face.
Despite being rushed to the hospital, Isabelle succumbed to her injuries in the early hours of September 14. Prosecutors asserted that the child was subjected to severe physical abuse, including violent shaking and impact to the head, leading to her tragic demise.
The prosecution argued that both Walker and Simpson likely had ample opportunities to harm the toddler in their small living space and were possibly aware of the ongoing abuse. Prior to her death, Isabelle had been taken to medical facilities due to a fractured leg, a condition that was deemed suspicious by medical personnel.
Further examinations post-mortem unveiled multiple fractures and extensive bruising consistent with forceful handling. Prosecutors highlighted Walker’s delayed reporting of the leg injury as indicative of a deliberate attempt to conceal the abuse.
The prosecution contended that the couple’s neglect in seeking timely medical help for Isabelle was a self-serving act to evade accountability for the child’s deteriorating health. The trial revealed details of an unhealthy relationship between the defendants characterized by substance abuse, leading to a decline in Isabelle’s well-being and exposure to regular violence.
Notably, CCTV footage from cameras installed at Walker’s residence captured evidence pertinent to the case. The prosecution emphasized a message from Walker to Simpson, where she portrayed herself as the primary caregiver for her daughter.
Legal proceedings are ongoing in this case.
