Heartbroken Son’s Final Wish for Father’s Ashes Goes Awry

A man was left heartbroken when his father’s ashes were mistakenly scattered over 200 miles away from his late wife, ruining the chance to fulfill his father’s final wish of being laid to rest next to her.

David Bishop, aged 60, had intended to collect his father John’s ashes and bury them beside his late mother at Babworth Crematorium in Nottinghamshire. Before his passing, John had moved to a care home to be nearer to his son after his wife’s death in June 2020. The couple was inseparable, but John tragically suffered a fatal heart attack after being hospitalized for routine checks.

The funeral, arranged by Co-op Funeralcare, where David’s late wife’s services were also held, took place in south Wales as per John’s request. However, John specifically wanted his ashes interred next to his wife in Nottinghamshire.

Following the cremation at Gwent Crematorium in south Wales on May 26, David learned two weeks later that the ashes had been scattered in the Garden of Remembrance, mistakenly believed to be the funeral director’s directive. David expressed disbelief and distress over the situation, feeling his father had been disrespected.

John was remembered as a beloved and vibrant individual, often likened to Father Christmas due to his striking appearance. He started his career as an apprentice in Cwmbran, eventually becoming a respected mining engineer.

Gwent Crematorium apologized to David and pledged an investigation into the incident. David, unsure of the next steps, expressed feeling empty and helpless, emphasizing his emotional turmoil over the situation.

Co-op Funeralcare confirmed that the instructions given to Gwent Crematorium aligned with the client’s wishes, expressing deep sadness over the distress caused to the family and offering ongoing support.

Newport City Council initiated an investigation to prevent similar errors in the future, extending a public apology to David and his family for the distressing ordeal.
