Passengers aboard a Chinese Tianjin Airlines flight were alarmed when a power bank malfunctioned, releasing dense smoke into the cabin as the plane neared its destination. Despite no visible fire, the strong smell caused concern among travelers.
Cabin crew swiftly responded to the situation, announcing a possible fire onboard and instructing passengers to remain calm. The incident occurred on June 15 as the Airbus A320neo was landing at Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport after departing from Tianjin Binhai International Airport in China.
Following a safe landing, passengers were evacuated without their belongings momentarily, then allowed to retrieve their items later. Tianjin Airlines confirmed that the power bank issue was promptly addressed, ensuring the safety of all passengers and the aircraft.
The airline emphasized the importance of checking power banks for certification and compliance with safety regulations. Despite causing a delay of approximately one hour and 12 minutes, no injuries were reported, and the aircraft remained undamaged.
This occurrence reflects the growing concern over power bank safety in the aviation industry, prompting stricter regulations globally. Tianjin Airlines permits passengers to carry power banks in hand luggage or on their person but prohibits them from checked baggage.
