A woman was attacked by a shark near the shore of Coogee Beach in Sydney, Australia, prompting the activation of a shark alarm. The victim, in her 30s, sustained severe arm and leg injuries and was taken to the hospital in critical condition by helicopter.
Authorities were alerted to the incident just before 11:15 am on Saturday, June 13. Eyewitnesses described a lifeguard swiftly responding to the victim’s distress calls, signaling the presence of the shark with an X gesture and sounding the alarm.
Members of the public assisted in rescuing the woman from the water and administered initial aid before emergency services arrived. Following on-site medical assistance, she was airlifted to the hospital for further treatment.
In response to the incident, several nearby beaches, including Coogee, Clovelly, and Bronte, were closed for safety reasons. This shark attack comes after a tragic incident involving a 12-year-old boy, Nico Antic, who lost his life to a shark attack in the same region earlier this year.
The recent shark attack has raised concerns among beachgoers, especially in light of the series of shark-related incidents that occurred following Nico’s tragic encounter.
