“Defense Ministers Resign Over Funding Dispute”

Keir Starmer faces a significant setback as both the Secretary of Defence, John Healey, and the Armed Forces minister, Al Carns, have tendered their resignations. Healey’s departure has triggered a crisis within the Ministry of Defence, leading to additional resignations from ministerial aides Pamela Nash and Rachel Hopkins. The resignations were prompted by a funding dispute, with Healey accusing the Prime Minister of failing to challenge the Treasury’s reluctance to allocate necessary funds for national defense. The Defense Investment Plan (DIP) has been a point of contention, being over six months behind schedule.

Healey expressed his dissatisfaction with the inadequate provisions outlined in the Defense Investment Plan, stating that it falls short of the essential defense requirements during these precarious times. Carns, a former Royal Marine, criticized the insufficient defense funding and highlighted the government’s neglect in addressing delays in the DIP.

In his resignation letter to the Prime Minister, Carns emphasized the importance of providing soldiers with the necessary equipment and support, criticizing the government for failing in this regard. Dan Jarvis has been appointed as the new Defense Secretary following Healey’s resignation. Jarvis, an Army veteran with experience in various conflict zones, including Kosovo, Northern Ireland, Sierra Leone, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
