“Rugby Icon Kevin Sinfield Nears Knighthood for MND Philanthropy”

Rugby icon Kevin Sinfield, renowned for his philanthropy towards Motor Neurone Disease, is on the brink of receiving a knighthood in the upcoming King’s Birthday Honours. The accolade recognizes his dedication in memory of his late friend and colleague, Rob Burrow, who valiantly fought the illness.

Sinfield, aged 45, has raised over £11 million for MND charities since Burrow’s diagnosis in 2019, which tragically led to his passing in 2024 at the age of 41. Hailing from Oldham and a former student of Saddleworth School, Sinfield’s remarkable rugby career with Leeds Rhinos saw him clinch numerous accolades including seven Super League titles, two Challenge Cups, three World Club Challenges, and three League Leaders’ Shields. Additionally, he represented England 29 times and Great Britain 14 times.

Following his retirement from professional play, Sinfield transitioned to rugby union, serving as a defense coach for both Leicester Tigers and the England national team. Notably, his exceptional fundraising endeavors commenced after Burrow’s diagnosis, culminating in various marathons and ultramarathons that raised millions for MND research.

In a heartfelt tribute to Burrow, Sinfield expressed profound admiration, remembering him as the toughest and bravest individual he had ever met. Sinfield, a devoted family man married to Jayne Sinfield with two sons, Jack and Sam, recently announced his final challenge, The Grand Finale. This challenge involves running approximately 30 miles each day to all 12 English Super League grounds before concluding at Old Trafford on October 3.

Acknowledging the collective effort behind his fundraising success, Sinfield emphasized the importance of continued support in the pursuit of finding a cure for MND. His unwavering commitment to honoring Burrow’s legacy and advancing MND research serves as a testament to his enduring compassion and resilience.
