A British man has gone missing in a popular holiday destination in Portugal, sparking a search operation. The 23-year-old was last seen swimming at Peneco Beach in southern Portugal with a 19-year-old compatriot. While the younger man safely made it out of the water unaided, the 23-year-old remains unaccounted for at sea.
Expert divers and law enforcement officials are actively involved in the search efforts. The National Maritime Authority issued a statement on Facebook, reporting that search operations had been suspended for the night without locating the missing individual. The operations involved various teams by sea, including crews from the Ferragudo Life Saving Station and volunteers from the Humanitarian Association of Volunteer Firefighters of Albufeira, along with a team of divers. Additionally, teams on the coast, such as the Portimão Maritime Police Local Command, the “SeaWatch” Project, the Municipal Civil Protection Service of Albufeira, and lifeguards, were conducting searches with drone support.
The search was paused overnight and is scheduled to resume the following morning. The statement also indicated that the 19-year-old companion of the missing man was safe and did not require medical attention. The British Embassy in Portugal, through the Consulate in Portimão, has been mobilized to contact the missing man’s family and offer support to the 19-year-old.
