Two teenagers have been apprehended, and a man is in critical condition in the hospital following a severe assault in Newcastle’s city center.
According to Northumbria Police, a man in his fifties was cycling on Claremont Road around 5:10 pm yesterday when two individuals on a moped allegedly approached him.
One of the moped riders reportedly pushed the man off his bicycle, causing him to fall to the ground, resulting in serious head injuries. The victim was rushed to the hospital, where he remains in a life-threatening state.
Following the incident, an investigation was launched by Northumbria Police, leading to the arrest of two teenage boys aged 16 and 14 at Walker Park on suspicion of intentional grievous bodily harm. The suspects are currently in police custody as inquiries continue.
A portion of Claremont Road has been cordoned off for investigation purposes, and a section of Walker Park is also closed. Authorities are urging any witnesses to provide information to assist in the investigation.
Detectives are particularly interested in hearing from individuals who were in the vicinity of Claremont Road shortly after 5 pm and those with dash cam footage.
