Terrorism authorities have assumed control of the investigation into a school stabbing incident resulting in the arrest of a 14-year-old girl. However, officials have clarified that the incident is not currently being treated as a terrorist act. The reasons behind this decision are being looked into.
A teacher and two students were stabbed at the Co-op Academy in Blackley, located in north Manchester, on Tuesday morning. The 14-year-old girl was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and charged with assault. Following an evaluation by a mental health professional, she was placed in police custody.
In an update on Thursday night, Counter Terrorism Policing North West announced that the 14-year-old schoolgirl has been formally charged with three counts of attempted murder.
Although Greater Manchester Police revealed on Thursday evening that Counter Terrorism Policing is spearheading the investigation, they emphasized that it has not been classified as a terrorist incident. The authorities stated that Counter Terrorism Policing North West has taken the lead in the inquiry following additional investigations. Searches are ongoing, and the counter terrorism detectives are considering all possible motives behind the attack.
Chief Superintendent David Meeney, Manchester’s Commander, mentioned, “Our local investigators have been diligently examining this case since the arrest of the schoolgirl suspect on Tuesday. She remains in custody in Manchester. Health professionals have assessed the suspect under the Mental Health Act, and thorough evidence review is ongoing to determine the cause of the incident.”
He added, “New information has surfaced since our last update, which has been shared with Counter Terrorism Policing North West. While this update may raise concerns in the community, there is no indication of any imminent threat. Local officers are present in the area to address any apprehensions.”
The heroic teacher who was stabbed in the neck while shielding students during the school’s lockdown has been identified as Maysum Abdullah, 27. Following the incident, his wife Samia expressed gratitude for the support received from colleagues, family, friends, hospital staff, police, and the community.
She stated, “Receiving a call about a loved one being stabbed and hospitalized is unexpected. I am thankful that his injuries were not life-threatening. Although his neck and hand wounds have been treated, our family is now facing various challenges.”
Samia extended her appreciation, saying, “I want to thank everyone for their kindness, support, and well-wishes during this trying time.”
